Swimming with whale sharks in the Maldives

One of the experiences that had been on my bucket list long before the silly "Do it for the 'Gram" trend was embraced by Millennials and/or Gen Zers all over the world involved swimming with some of the most fascinating gentle giants of the ocean: whale sharks. Contrary to popular belief, there have been quite a few sightings of them here in the UAE as well, a fact which I have been mentioning quite often during my regular Dubai city tours over the past few years. Glad I did that, as one of my tourists overheard me saying I wanted to swim with them but hadn't made up my mind yet as to where (the Philippines were definitely out of the question) and suggested the Maldives. And while I do love the Maldives and have been to the islands countless times, I am not one of those people that are so blinded by the turquoise waters and seemingly idyllic surroundings that they no longer notice anything else. Knowing that the Maldives are far from being the paradise some people think (or knowingly deceive others) they are, I was quite skeptical at first, but promised myself I would nevertheless look into it later. And I did.

What I found during that research looked indeed pretty promising, so when December came and with it some unexpected days off right before my birthday, we booked our flights to a teeny-tiny island in the South Ari atoll and off we went!

Într-o lume a "influencerilor" de carton recompensați mult peste valoare pentru a face reclamă la te miri ce flecuștețe consumeriste absolut inutile, în fapt, vieții umane - după cum constată tot mai mulți dintre "scâncei" (aka millennials) zilele acestea - și a cohortei nesfârșite de duduițe răsfățate și inutile (zise și "instagramărițe/vlogărițe de succes") cu creierașul cât nuca și preocupări rizibile care aveau impresia că baletarea în cârpișoare colorate și ședințele foto narcisiste în varii locuri de pe planetă avea să țină la nesfărșit și că nimic nu-i mai de preț pe lume decît gadget-urile de care se-nconjurau stupid ca într-o iluzorie fortăreață, pandemia de coronavirus vine să facă un pic de (necesară) curățenie.

Într-o lume atât de plină de ea și de așa-zisele-i progrese, atât de pregătită să arate cu deștul în toate direcțiile nepotrivite, atât de sigură că ea, așa civilizată, minunată și-mpufoșată cum este, nu va păți ce au pățit alții, nu va reacționa cum - pfff! - au reacționat alții, pandemia de coronavirus vine să evidențieze nenumăratele hibe și lacune esențiale ale unui sistem preocupat în fond de orice, numai de oameni nu, dar și ipocrizia fără margini a celor care azi cerșesc, fie și indirect, ajutor si solidaritate din partea celor la care nu mai departe de ieri se uitau cu scârbă și profund dispreț.

Într-o lume scutită o bună bucată de vreme de neplăceri majore de tipul războaielor, catastrofelor și molimelor devastatoare cărora o mare parte dintre vrednicii noștri înaintași nu doar că le-au supravețuit, dar din care nu puțini au ieșit întăriți și cu fruntea sus, pandemia de coronavirus rânjește hidos adevăraților neputincioși de azi, în marea lor parte tineri, pe care orice fleac îi doboară psihic și pentru care nu perspectiva foametei ori dispariției premature a părinților și bunicilor lor și ai altora, ci statul acasă și lipsa temporară a obișnuințelor și/sau anturajului reprezintă reala tragedie a vremurilor pe care le trăim.

Traveling is all about the knowledge we gain and the precious memories we create. And from this point of view 2019 - a  truly record-breaking year, as I was calling it in my previous article - was nothing short of amazing! Not only did we finally get to check some of the most sought-after countries for culture and nature aficionados like ourselves off the bucket list, but we were also blessed with quite a few out-of-this-world experiences, breathtaking views (including some fantastic window views from both airplane windows and hotel rooms!) and plenty of sunshine even when we least expected it (oh well, with one notable exception which actually improved our travel experience this one time - I am obviously talking about China's Great Wall, check out the first part of this review for pictures). But most of all, 2019 was (again) a year of marvelous encounters with some of our favorite living creatures, among them Ethiopia's endemic Gelada baboons, Borneo's endemic Proboscis monkeys, Uganda's fearsome mountain gorillas and playful chimps and sometimes... even people (lol). If I were to summarize 2019 by way of a joke related to the Chinese year/zodiac craze, I would say it was - for us - the year of the monkey rather than the year of the pig! :)))

On a more serious note, I have always considered that (at least for us) trips tend to happen at the right time and for a specific reason and some of last's year's trips have definitely left their mark on the two of us and triggered decisions that we have already turned into reality and are very proud of. Also, the best things that happened to us are better left unsaid... as always ;).

Surprise of the year: amazing Tajikistan 

There are good years and not-so-good years. There are years to remember and years you wish you could forget. There are long years, seemingly never-ending years and years that pass in the blink of an eye. An then there are great years... surprising, mind-blowing, record-breaking years like 2019. Please bear with my overuse of hyperbolic adjectives, how else do you think could one describe a year that has been richer in travel and experiences than (almost) all those before? 

But hey, you don't need to take my word for it, with all this social media craziness people really tend to exaggerate these days, don't they? So let's... um... see the figures. Which by the way I'm only listing here year after year lest I should forget them - and I have to admit even this would be quite a difficult task if I didn't have a number of notebooks to help me keep record of my past travels.

Top 10 destinații de aventură după 13 ani, 90 de țări și 7 continente

De când mă știu am visat la cele mai năstrușnice experiențe în cele mai îndepărtate colțuri ale planetei. Greu de crezut dat fiind tendințele (ori mai degrabă metehnele) actuale, dar în tot acest timp obiectivul meu principal nu era nicidecum realizarea fotografiei perfecte în fața cine știe cărei atracții instagramabile (mă îndoiesc sincer că exista Instagram pe atunci, iar dacă totuși exista, am fost cu siguranță ultima persoană care a aflat de el), nici demersul frivol de a mă trage în poză la respectiva atracție în scopul meschin al etalării celei mai noi rochițe cu model de... draperie, cu atât mai puțin acela de a realiza un preaminunat selfie la atracția cu pricina după ce voi fi petrecut o oră și mai bine într-o coadă interminabilă alături de alți aventurieri cel puțin la fel de îndrăgostiți de ei înșiși de călătorii ca și mine, al căror unic laitmotiv în viață constă, ai zice, în dictonul "picture or it didn't happen" (pe vremea aceea nici măcar o cameră foto cumsecade nu aveam, așa încât multe dintre fotografiile mele din primii ani de călătorie sunt neclare ori ratate de-a binelea). Trebuie să remarc totuși că nici n-aș fi avut mari șanse de a participa la toată nebunia asta de vreme ce majoritatea destinațiilor de pe lista mea erau relativ necunoscute și în orice caz la ani-lumină de popularitatea conferită, astăzi, unora dintre ele ca urmare a proliferării rețelelor de socializare și nesuferitelor clișee ale călătorilor. Dacă n-aș fi văzut cu ochii mei cât rău a făcut, în ceva mai mult de 10 ani, toata faima aceasta neavenită unor locuri pe vremuri ca și pustii și doar rareori vizitate, zău că n-aș fi crezut poate nici eu că așa ceva se poate întâmpla într-un ritm galopant.
