Swimming with whale sharks in the Maldives

One of the experiences that had been on my bucket list long before the silly "Do it for the 'Gram" trend was embraced by Millennials and/or Gen Zers all over the world involved swimming with some of the most fascinating gentle giants of the ocean: whale sharks. Contrary to popular belief, there have been quite a few sightings of them here in the UAE as well, a fact which I have been mentioning quite often during my regular Dubai city tours over the past few years. Glad I did that, as one of my tourists overheard me saying I wanted to swim with them but hadn't made up my mind yet as to where (the Philippines were definitely out of the question) and suggested the Maldives. And while I do love the Maldives and have been to the islands countless times, I am not one of those people that are so blinded by the turquoise waters and seemingly idyllic surroundings that they no longer notice anything else. Knowing that the Maldives are far from being the paradise some people think (or knowingly deceive others) they are, I was quite skeptical at first, but promised myself I would nevertheless look into it later. And I did.

What I found during that research looked indeed pretty promising, so when December came and with it some unexpected days off right before my birthday, we booked our flights to a teeny-tiny island in the South Ari atoll and off we went!

2019 - And what a (record-breaking) year it has been! (II)

Happy lady in Uganda
Traveling is all about the knowledge we gain and the precious memories we create. And from this point of view 2019 - a  truly record-breaking year, as I was calling it in my previous article - was nothing short of amazing! Not only did we finally get to check some of the most sought-after countries for culture and nature aficionados like ourselves off the bucket list, but we were also blessed with quite a few out-of-this-world experiences, breathtaking views (including some fantastic window views from both airplane windows and hotel rooms!) and plenty of sunshine even when we least expected it (oh well, with one notable exception which actually improved our travel experience this one time - I am obviously talking about China's Great Wall, check out the first part of this review for pictures). But most of all, 2019 was (again) a year of marvelous encounters with some of our favorite living creatures, among them Ethiopia's endemic Gelada baboons, Borneo's endemic Proboscis monkeys, Uganda's fearsome mountain gorillas and playful chimps and sometimes... even people (lol). If I were to summarize 2019 by way of a joke related to the Chinese year/zodiac craze, I would say it was - for us - the year of the monkey rather than the year of the pig! :)))

On a more serious note, I have always considered that (at least for us) trips tend to happen at the right time and for a specific reason and some of last's year's trips have definitely left their mark on the two of us and triggered decisions that we have already turned into reality and are very proud of. Also, the best things that happened to us are better left unsaid... as always ;).

Check out a quick recap of the past year below...

2019 - And what a (record-breaking) year it has been! (I)

Surprise of the year: amazing Tajikistan
There are good years and not-so-good years. There are years to remember and years you wish you could forget. There are long years, seemingly never-ending years and years that pass in the blink of an eye. An then there are great years... surprising, mind-blowing, record-breaking years like 2019. Please bear with my overuse of hyperbolic adjectives, how else do you think could one describe a year that has been richer in travel and experiences than (almost) all those before?

But hey, you don't need to take my word for it, with all this social media craziness people really tend to exaggerate these days, don't they? So let's... um... see the figures. Which by the way I'm only listing here year after year lest I should forget them - and I have to admit even this would be quite a difficult task if I didn't have a number of notebooks to help me keep record of my past travels.

My top 10 adventure destinations after 13 years of travel, 90 countries and 7 continents

Not true, Bora Bora was by far my least favorite island in French Polynesia :))
For as long as I can remember I've dreamt about the most impossible adventures in some of earth's remotest locations. Unbelievably (by today's standards) the reason for this was not getting that perfect shot in front of God knows what "instagramable" attraction (there was no Instagram back then or, if there was, I was probably the last person to find out), nor doing the silliest, most unnatural looking poses in my shiny new curtain-like dress, not even taking a selfie in front of that attraction after spending an hour or so in a never-ending queue of equally "travel-loving" adventurers, for whom "picture or it didn't happen" is probably the only thinkable life motto (until recently I did not even have a proper camera, so most of my travel pictures from earlier years are blurry or unworthy of attention). I have to mention it would have been difficult to be a part of all this anyway, as most destinations on my "bucket list" were largely unheard of and by no means as popular as social media and travelers' cliches have made some of them today. It's hard to believe, but sadly oh so true how much harm 10 or more years gone by can bestow upon previously pristine and rarely (if ever) visited destinations and I would not have believed it myself had I not seen it happening with my own eyes.

How not to gain weight while traveling

Early morning (Easter day) jogging in Nice, France
As someone who travels really often - and I mean really, really often - one of  the things I definitely need to consider when overseas is maintaining a balance between enjoying life to the fullest and keeping healthy. 13 years ago when I started traveling intensely I would have never even wasted a thought on that, but time as well as experience have taught me that a healthy traveler is a happy traveler and, most of all, a smart traveler. And if I mention how much the mere thought of maybe having to stop traveling one day frightens me, perhaps you'll understand why nowadays I have an interest in postponing that day as much as possible, even if this means skipping that much-awaited cocktail once in a while, learning to make the right choices when on the airplane or at the restaurant or, most importantly, regularly hitting the gym, the running track, the pool, the slopes and so on.

One of the aspects of a healthy lifestyle is - and I guess you'll agree with me on that one - maintaining a healthy weight. I have not always been good at that myself as I was already implying a few lines further up but have, in time, learnt how to not gain (too much) weight while traveling. Looking back now I realise how funny it must have sounded to my parents when sometimes my excuse for overindulging on trips was "but I only do this or that when on vacation". Until one day my mother replied with a sentence which, upon pondering, I actually found to be quite true: "but you are on vacation all the time". Oops, got me on that one...
